I created Photography Lounge, a community for photographers on Discord. It opened shop in July 2020 when I was 15, and since then has become the largest photography community on the platform. I pulled its all-time numbers and created data illustrations to illustrate its growth and engagement.
There was no single virality event; it truly was a blood, sweat and tears situation. The server added 3,707 people in its first year of activity and 11,650 in the last twelve months — about 32 a day, every day. Each 10,000 has taken about a year: 10k in Feb 2023, 20k in Aug 2024, 30k in Aug 2025, 40k in Jun 2026.
The busiest month ever was January 2026: 436,635 messages, or one every 6 seconds for the entire month. Since mid-2023 the server has held between 270k and 440k a month.
In May 2021 the average member sent 64 messages. In July 2026 it was 8. Messages went up 2.0x while members went up 15x — not out of the ordinary. Larger groups are intimidating, chats move faster, etc.
12,984 hours in 2025 against 5,485 in 2024, a 2.4x jump. The record is January 2025: 1,478 hours in a 31-day month, which is 2 people on a call at every moment, day and night. Nearly all of it happens in one channel — see below.
One channel carries 43% of everything ever said. Gear talk, across its current and archived channels, is the next 24%.
Editing Stream — people editing photos live, on stream, for anyone to watch — is 46% of all voice time: 15,525 hours, or 1.8 years of continuous editing.
The ten most active members wrote 3,227,612 messages between them, 19% of the whole server. The top poster alone accounts for one in every 30.

Counted by Statbot, captured August 25, 2026. August 2026 is a partial month and drawn faded. Member counts are Statbot's monthly snapshots; totals cover everything it has ever seen, so early history may be slightly undercounted. Usernames are public Discord handles.
